| Legendary Winged Express Celebrating 50 Wild Years at the 19th California Hot Rod Reunion
|Back in the 60s, if you were to mention the name Marcellus and Borsch Winged Express, you could strike fear in the hearts of other Fuel Altereds. This year, the legendary Winged Express celebrates its 50th Anniversary and its creator and curator Al “Mousie” Marcellus is a Reunion Honoree.
During the nostalgic weekend at Famoso, Marcellus will be on hand signing autographs and retelling the fearless, one-handed driving adventures of the late William “Wild Willie” Borsch, considered the Evel Knievel of drag racing. You can also pay your respects to Wild Willie who travels with “Mousie” in a special urn. Part of the Reunion drag strip action includes exhibition runs by the world-famous Winged Express driven by the equally-daring driver Mike Boyd.
Join us at the Doubletree Hotel on Friday, Oct. 15 for the annual Reunion Honoree Reception to pay tribute to the heroes and wild rides from the early days of drag racing including Mousie, Grand Marshal Tom Hanna, Honorees Don Long, Tom Prufer, Bill Bagshaw, the duo of Steinegger and Eshenbaugh, and the Justice Brothers Spotlight shines on the Jungle Jim Funny Car Team.
Besides the Winged Express, Reunion fans will be able to see more than 200 race cars including front engine Top Fuel and Funny Cars, and more gassers than you can shake a flag at. Couple that with hundreds of memory lane rods, customs, classics, trucks and rat rods, a swap meet, a vendor midway and so much more including the amazing Cacklefest on Saturday and Sunday!
While at the Reunion, make sure you make a pit stop at the Reunion Souvenir Tent at Famoso and pick up a “Gathering of Geezers” t-shirt featuring the legendary Winged Express.
Entrance is just $20 per day for Friday and Saturday and on Sunday it’s only $25. Children under 16 are free every day when accompanied by a paying adult—what a deal. For more information on the Reunion, visit http://museum.nhra.com or, call 909.622.2133.
